Mortality due to systemic mycoses as a primary cause of death or in association with AIDS in Brazil: a review from 1996 to 2006

    Get PDF
Deaths caused by systemic mycoses such as paracoccidioidomycosis, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis, coccidioidomycosis and zygomycosis amounted to 3,583 between 1996-2006 in Brazil. When analysed as the underlying cause of death, paracoccidioidomycosis represented the most important cause of deaths among systemic mycoses (~ 51.2%). When considering AIDS as the underlying cause of death and the systemic mycoses as associated conditions, cryptococcosis (50.9%) appeared at the top of the list, followed by candidiasis (30.2%), histoplasmosis (10.1%) and others. This mortality analysis is useful in understanding the real situation of systemic mycoses in Brazil, since there is no mandatory notification of patients diagnosed with systemic mycoses in the official health system.FAPESPCNP

Além disso, as piores empresas são aquelas que necessitam de maiores mudanças em seus níveis de inputs e/ou output, para alcançar a eficiência máxima.---------------------------------------------Agribusiness is one of the most important sector of Brazilian economy and its industrial segment has increasingly performed a significant role. Due to this relevance, technical and management issues concerning the segment requires a closer attention. This articles attempts to provide a comprehensive discussion of the organizational performance, with accounting and financial variables, of several economic sectors of the brazilian agribusiness industrial segment. By applying a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), we sought to identify a multicriterial performance index for each company and to provide a benchmarking analysis that shows what inefficient companies should do to become efficient. The results showed that better ranked companies were those that best mixed its inputs (the lowest the best indexes) in the search of output (the greatest the best index). Further, worse ranked companies were those that required deep changes in its inputs and/or output levels in order to reach the maximum efficiency.Agronegócio, Desempenho Contábil-Financeiro, DEA, Agribusiness, Accounting and Financial Performance, Agribusiness,

Pedoenvironments driving the monodominance of Peltogyne gracilipes (Leguminosae) in the Northern Amazon, Brazil

Monodominance is unusual in the tropics when compared to the high diversity of tropical forests. Peltogyne gracilipes (Leguminosae) is a deciduous tree species that forms monodominant forests in the Brazilian Northern Amazon region. Initial research confirmed that P. gracilipes monodominance was associated with higher soil magnesium content, while recent studies have indicated a larger number of variables, suggesting a more complex hydro-edaphic habitat. As such, the present study aimed to describe the hydro-edaphic habitat (pedoenvironment) where P. gracilipes is monodominant. Edaphic and topographic variables (drainage proxy) were used in a forest inventory conducted in 129 sampling plots. Trees with a stem diameter greater than 10 cm were analyzed. Aboveground biomass was used as a descriptive variable of the different habitats in the study area. A total of 3041 individuals were sampled (298 P. gracilipes). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the highest P. gracilipes abundance occurred in poorly drained (seasonal flooding) low-altitude habitats (<66 m), with high soil Fe+2 and Mg+2 concentrations. P. gracilipes monodominance in the study area is best described in habitats with more restricted hydro-edaphic conditions, where drainage is the primary factor and Fe+2 and Mg+2 are secondary agents resulting from the effect of seasonally drained soils. This study contributes to better understanding the environmental filters that characterize areas where P. gracilipes is more abundant, indicating that this species might potentially become monodominant in more restricted hydro-edaphic habitats in the Northern Amazon

Botulism in Cattle Associated with Osteophagy in the State of Acre, Brazil

Background:Botulism is a non-febrile intoxication resulting from the ingestion of Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins manifested by partial or complete flaccid paralysis of the musculature of locomotion, swallowing and respiration. The objective of this study was to report the first case of botulinum intoxication associated with osteopathy in the state of Acre, as well as to alert breeders and veterinarians to the incidence of this disease in cattle farming.Case: The present report is an outbreak of botulism in the municipality of Acrelândia, in the state of Acre, which resulted in the death of 16 Nelore beef cattle in approximately 30 days. The affected animals were females in reproductive phase maintained under extensive breeding system. The main clinical signs presented were weakness in the pelvic limbs, prostration, recumbency and death in less than 48 hours. Only one animal, with similar symptomatology, was found alive and submitted to emergency therapeutic measures, but without success. During the necropsy of this bovine, no significant changes were found, only related to the decubitus and agony time, except for fragments of long bones visualized in the reticulum. Samples of bone particles, ruminal contents, reticulum, rumen and intestine fragments were collected for the detection of botulinum toxins by the mouse bioassay method, as well as brain and brain stem for differential diagnosis of rabies and bovine spongiform encephalopathy by direct immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The samples were sent to the Laboratory of General Bacteriology of the Biological Institute, São Paulo, Brazil, and all the analyzes presented negative results.Discussion: One of the main risk factors for the occurrence of botulinum toxin is the presence of carcasses in the pastures, added to the deficiency of phosphorus and other minerals. The cattle develop the habit of gnawing bones and tissues from dead animals in the field. With this exercise, animals can ingest pre-formed toxins in corpses, as decomposing remains offer an anaerobic environment conducive to spore development and toxin production. Bovine females, in breeding, present greater nutritional need than adult males and younger animals. This is because the reproductive phase increases the demands of minerals, vitamins and organic compounds that participate in the female's reproductive physiological process. In this case, the inadequate supply of minerals may stimulate the osteopagic practice of cadaveric remains in the pastures, making the bovids susceptible to botulism. Diagnosis is established by means of clinical signs, epidemiological characteristics and absence of specific anatomopathological findings. Confirmation is given by the isolation of the toxin in the body of the diseased animal. However, the lack of detection of this does not rule out the possibility of occurrence of the disease, in view of the rapid passage of the neurotoxin through the hematogenous route and through the tissues before reaching the neuromuscular junctions. In suspect cases, it is important to perform a differential diagnosis for other diseases that demonstrate clinical symptoms of neurological or acute neuromuscular character. The description of this outbreak, besides exposing the first notification of botulism in the state of Acre, shows the epidemiological relationship between the main risk factors and the occurrence of the disease in the Brazilian herds

Theoretical calculations of the kinetics of the oh reaction with 2-methyl-2-propen-1-ol and its alkene analogue

In this work, the first and rate determining steps on the mechanism of the OH addition to 2-methyl-2-propen-1-ol (MPO221) and methylpropene (M2) have been studied at the DFT level, employing the BHandHLYP functional and the cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets. The thermochemical properties of equilibrium (enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energies) have been determined within the conventional statistical thermodynamics relations and the rate coefficients have been determined on the basis of the variational transition state theory. The adoption of the microcanonical variational transition state theory was proved to be crucial for the description of the kinetics of OH addition to these unsaturated compounds. The rate coefficients obtained for the OH reactions with MPO221 and M2 at 298.15K deviate, respectively, 27% and 13% from the experimental rate coefficient available in the literature. A non-Arrhenius profile is observed for the rate coefficients. Moreover, the values of the rate coefficients for the MPO221 + OH reaction are greater than those for the M2 + OH reaction, suggesting that the substitution of the hydrogen atom in an alkene by the ?OH functional group, increases the reactivity in respect to the hydroxyl radical.Fil: Da Silva Barbosa, Thais.
